Stepping inside the front door from the lush garden, Maison Cabrière genuinely does feel like a home-away-from-home, which is why it is so loved by return guests who enjoy the attention to detail and thoughtful, personal touches. The tastefully decorated suites are generously sized with the larger ones upstairs under the thatched roof. A glass-lined balcony overlooks the pool and surrounding lush gardens with mature trees framed by magnificent mountain views. Downstairs, each of the suites open to a private terrace and are close to the pool deck – all restful spots to read a book and enjoy a cup of tea or glass of Cape wine at sundown. The architectural style is best described as ‘modern Cape Dutch’, but their interiors are calm and clean-lined – sophisticated, Scandinavian style with ‘touches of African warmth’.

Maison Cabrière will be sold as a fully functioning boutique hotel: each suite has everything a guest needs to make a stay delightfully comfortable. But the most wonderful aspect about staying here is the location: Cabrière Street is one of the most beautiful in Franschhoek, yet when you step out of the back gate, you’re less than 170m from the bustling main road in the village, renowned for its world-class restaurants, cosy coffee shops, art galleries and beautifully curated boutiques. Walking back from dinner up the road at night is so easy but there’s secure parking for six cars on the property for guests who want to explore further and enjoy the wine routes of Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, Paarl and Wellington to the fullest… and the city of Cape Town is just under an hour’s drive. Hermanus is an easy day trip too, especially for whale watching during season. ‘We love hiking in the mountains at Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve,’ says Eveline, ‘but guests are welcome to use the bicycles to explore the village or surrounding estates.’ In winter, when the peaks are lightly dusted with snow, a cosy fireplace awaits…
