If heaven were on earth, it would be in Groot Paternoster. Whale Cottage in the Groot Paternoster Private Nature Reserve rests on a slice of pristine paradise. One of only 10 houses in this exclusive, 165-hectare reserve on the headland overlooking the bay of Paternoster, this is the ultimate place to disconnect and reconnect. It’s pure balm for the soul.
Clad with natural calcrete stone from the area, this enchanting home was built about 25 years ago – right in the front row with nothing but ocean and beach before it. It’s a haven of tranquillity and safety, where you can watch changing tides as well as both sunrise and sunset over the ocean.
Completely off the grid, yet with every creature comfort, Whale Cottage is sensitively built and completely sustainable. It’s skirted with frilly fynbos and wild flowers and cooled by sea breezes in summer. Thoughtfully designed to accommodate the prevailing winds, there are two seafront verandahs and an internal courtyard for alfresco living.
The enchanting interior is cool in summer with its clay tiled floors, reed ceilings and open thatch roofs. In winter it’s deeply cosy with a woodfire crackling in the raw stone hearth. Natural materials have been used throughout the home and wooden fixtures are crafted from West African Iroko, which has the rich colour of teak. Here, the natural world lives comfortably inside too.
Whether you are cooking, dining, relaxing or have just awoken in the master bedroom – the ocean is always full frame. So throw open the front doors, step onto the wide verandah and breathe in the fresh ocean air. It’s right there, 180 degees of it, along with a private 6km-long beach dotted with coves and little bays – and more seabirds, dolphins and whales than can be counted.
Start the day gently, fire up the coffee machine and have a cup as the sun rises and paints the sea pale pink. Enjoy a slow breakfast in the courtyard. Then head down to the beach to explore or bird watch, cycle or walk as far as you wish. Head back and snack on lunch on the verandah and maybe indulge in a siesta too – or simply watch the natural theatre that effortlessly surrounds you.
As the sun dips, enjoy a sundowner with the ultimate unfettered views. Then, for a night out, drive down the hill along the sand road to Paternoster and enjoy a meal at one of its world-class restaurants. But chances are good you won’t want to leave the reserve at all. It is everything and more that a true nature lover’s heart could desire, and with the ethos of conscious living. Whale Cottage is at the heart of it all, standing steadfast looking out to sea.
