Spectacular Seaside Living!
A prime piece of holiday heaven – centrally located, overlooking Lookout Beach, with wide sweeping views over the bay. Named for its panoramic ‘lookout’ over Lookout Beach and lagoon, Lookout House is completely private, cosseted in lush indigenous gardens and with views of deep blue sea and sky. The crystal cut Outeniqua mountains are in the distance, while whales and dolphins frolic freely in the curved bay below.
Held within a horseshoe in the evocative ‘old worlde’ part of Plettenberg Bay, this three-storey plantation-style home is completely protected from wind. Built elevated from the beach – but with direct access – Lookout House is bathed in light and views, and you’ll see magenta sunrises over the bay.
This is a sophisticated, deeply comfortable home that has the atmosphere of a relaxed European farmhouse meets Caribbean Plantation retreat. Art from Paris flea markets and local contemporary artists adorns the walls, medicine bottles from antique markets in France and unusual collectables from Argentina give the interior of the beach house eclectic flair.
At the heart of the home is a double-volume, open raftered, long barn from which the veranda, bar area, fire pit, and deck all flow. At one end of the barn is an extensive, soft-seating area around a cosy wood-burning stove in a large fireplace. Right above the fireplace, a feature north-facing window gives views of seagulls flying by.
The kitchen at the other end of the barn, has a long, 14-seater bar-height dining table linking the two areas. Replicating a traditional French monks’ table, this communal dining space is a favourite gathering place in the home. Bedrooms and private spaces surround the barn area, so you can disappear to privacy but still be close by. Or choose a hideaway spot on the wrap-around veranda.
Flow between the inside-outside areas is seamless and invites friends and family to gather, dine and relax together. The central living area with all the outside spaces can comfortably accommodate 50 people, without being crowded. The veranda deck dining area has a gas braai, while an outside firepit beckons fireside chats and stargazing. The dramatic Craig Kaplan designed sea-facing, infinity pool is the central feature of the home. It invites lazy days and languid cool offs, as you stare out to sea.
Lookout House has six bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Four double bedrooms (three en suite, and one with a dedicated bathroom) lead off the central barn living area. The master bedroom, with a walk-in dressing room and private lounge, occupies the entire top floor and has elevated, unpunctuated sea and mountain views. A children’s playroom or teenage TV lounge, along with two bedrooms and three bathrooms, are on the ground floor – which has direct access to the pool and garden, where indigenous birds and mongooses also live.
This home simply lives well. There are no sharp edges but plenty of warmth and cosiness. Wooden floors, layers of soft texture, nooks and corners to cocoon in epitomise Lookout House’s lifestyle charm. It’s inviting and unpretentious, like artisan bread.
The home is ideally suited to a large family or extended family, as it easily sleeps 16 people – and has staff quarters too. It’s a place to make memories, take lazy summer holidays, be communal or escape to solitude. Lookout House invites you to curl up and put your feet on the sofa. Here, relaxation and comfort is an art, while the home epitomises life well lived.
