Key features: The epitome of African farmhouse romance
Camp Karoo is the epitome of African farmhouse romance. Time spent here is close to nature and if you sit long enough on the stoep, kudu or nyala often drift through the garden and sip a little pool water on their way.
Set in 673 hectares of pristine Karoo bushveld, surrounded by mountains in a valley all of its own, Camp Karoo is 6.5km from Kleinpoort in the Baviaans Wilderness area which boasts three converging biomes – Karoo, valley bushveld and fynbos – and because of this, over 200 species of bird have been recorded. Nature lovers are treated to a variety of flora, with eye-catching flowering aloes.
Currently run as a successful self-catering guesthouse, the lodge is filled with much-loved and beautifully curated collectables by its owners who are passionate about conservation in the Eastern Cape and used to own a five-star game reserve on the adjoining property.
The lodge offers a broad veranda for lazy siestas and precious time spent together and languid sundowners in the late afternoon. The lodge sleeps fourteen people in total and is ideal for family accommodation or tourism purposes. In summer it’s beautifully cool and on chilly winter evenings an open fireplace connects the dining and living areas.
Begin your day with an early morning game drive in your own game vehicle to a 360-degree viewpoint to the distinctive Cockscomb peak with the opportunity to view the giraffe, impala, springbok, kudu, buffalo, zebra, and klipspringer along the route. At night there is the chance to enjoy bright starry skies for hours around the fire or cosy
evenings indoors, with a wood fire blazing in the central fireplace and the comforting scent of paraffin lamps.
Situated between Graaff Reinet and Port Elizabeth, Camp Karoo is ideally located to explore the Kleinpoort region which is fast developing a reputation as an eco-destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. It offers the ideal introduction to the African bush with birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts able to plan day trips to numerous national parks and game reserves, including Addo Elephant National Park, nearby. It is also easily accessible as it is only a 1 hour 30 minute drive north of Port Elizabeth.
