Property Description

It’s rare to find a country retreat as unique and authentic as Penhill at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains. A scenic 90-minute drive from Cape Town, it is nothing short of an oasis in the ruggedly beautiful Nuy Valley, so it’s easy to imagine this wonderful historical place as it was some 300 years ago when it was built as a refreshment station on the busy route to Stellenbosch, Swellendam and Graaff Reinet.

Having been lovingly restored, Penhill has literally gone back to its roots, although, rather than a stop for the ox-wagons of yesteryear, it’s now a private and very special place for groups of up to 24 people to relax and replenish body, mind and soul.

With a dam to cool off in the summer months, the Karoo’s finest tennis court, a boules court and croquet for family fun, swimming pools at three of the houses, trails for gentle walks, more strenuous hikes and runs, and several superb mountain biking trails running through the farm this is not a place where one can get bored!

Situated on the far side of the dam with magnificent views of the Naudesberg in the distance, Penhill Pepper Tree is the farm’s original homestead and the oldest dwelling in the Nuy Valley, having been built in 1750 from mud bricks, poplar beams and thatch.

Penhill Farm comprises a Manor House and four smaller cottages, all beautifully furnished, plus a building called The Cellars, where everyone can congregate. This classic Cape Dutch building has a lounge and bar area and seated dining for all 24 guests, allowing all to gather when the farm is being used for weddings, family reunions, and milestone celebrations.

Surrounded by vineyards, Penhill supplies grapes to a neighbouring farm to produce a bespoke wine and is conveniently situated at the start of Route 62 – an iconic road tripper’s delight and the longest wine route in the world.
