Description

A mere 117km from Cape Town, this charming guest house for sale in the tiny village of Koringberg has a golden allure that makes it the ultimate country getaway…

A short meander from Cape Town along the N7 finds you deep among the undulating wheatfields surrounding Koringberg. This tiny farming village is a sleepy hamlet, little changed by the pace of the outside world. It has a golden allure. Here, summer days seem longer, the starry nights stretch out. It’s the perfect place to unwind, relax and forget about the world beyond. And there’s no better place to do this than at The White House, a sensitively restored 1904 Victorian home.

It’s no real surprise that White House was named ‘House of the Year’ by House and Leisure in 2010… and ever since, it has just got better. This tranquil self-catering country house honours its heritage while responding to a thoroughly contemporary reworking of the space. The home still features the original wood floorboards, exposed stone leiklip walls, doors, architraves, windows, shutters and ceilings, giving it an honest, timeless simplicity. The high ceilings, generous proportions and thick walls keep the interiors deliciously cool in the heat of summer.

An established and successful self-catering rental destination, White House is also ideal as a family holiday home. It is charmingly decorated with a montage of appealing furnishings. Comfort is key, so all the necessary conveniences for easy living have been remembered – including a wood-burning fireplace in the main king-size bedroom! White House sleeps up to nine people in four bedrooms. Two airy en-suite bedrooms lead off to the left and right of the dining area. From the kitchen area, head through the stained-glass double doors across the courtyard to the Annex, where you’ll find an inviting two-bedroom suite, perfect for a family. Here, one of the home’s original round water tanks has been converted into a delightful en-suite bathroom.

The cosy living area tucked in a corner is an open-plan yet peaceful retreat focused around the wood-burning fireplace. But the heart of the home opens up around a spacious central kitchen/dining area – fully kitted for lingering over delicious home-cooked meals around the long central dining table. It has all the mod-cons, including a Paul Bocuse gas stove, electric oven, microwave, fridge-freezer, small beverage fridge, dishwasher and a mobile butcher’s block for additional preparation space.

If you’re feeling somewhat energetic, why not set up a game of boule on the court in the indigenous garden, where you’ll also find a swimming pool to splash in? Or just flop onto a lounger with your book to soak up the sun. Long summer evenings might entice you to cook outdoors at the pizza oven or outdoor braai area on the back terrace. “On Saturdays we usually sit out at the terrace and enjoy long lunches, just chilling out. The best thing about White House is that it is the destination; there is absolutely no impulse to leave or rush about.”

The corrugated-iron-covered front stoep is a wonderful outdoor living and dining space in the heat of summer, and a sheltered spot in winter. “In summer, when we sit here and look across the garden and fields towards the Piekenierskloof mountains, it is golden and the light is absolutely beautiful. In winter, it is luscious green; and in wildflower season, it is a rainbow of delight,” says the seller. “There is no noise in Koringberg, and in the evenings we just listen to the cicadas and savour the silence. It’s intensely peaceful.”

Despite this sense of remoteness, Koringberg is surprisingly central: in a 45-minute radius you’ll find the West Coast National Park, Tulbagh, Riebeek Kasteel, Piekernierskloof and Misverstand Dam, to name just a few spots. What a treat if you do want to head out on an excursion!
