From the minute the owner first laid eyes on her two hectares of fynbos wonderland within the private nature reserve in the mountains overlooking the Breedekloof Valley, she knew she’d design a retreat where people could enjoy the spectacular beauty around them from everywhere in the house. “My vision was for every room to have its own special views, opening each space to the outside world. To bring nature closer to us, to connect us to the moments outside that normally go unnoticed because we have our eyes on something else.” Hence the name of the cabin: Oomblik means “moment”, and there many magical ones here.

“At Mount Bain Reserve you are completely secluded, and the peace and silence soak into you. There is zero light pollution, so the stars are extraordinary  – although when you glimpse lights twinkling faintly in the far distance, you get a good feeling of community,” says the owner.

Earthy tones and organic textures throughout the streamlined interior enhance the serene ambience. The open-plan living and dining area is complemented by the cook’s kitchen, equipped with all you need to enjoy cooking up a storm. “My favourite time of day here is the very early morning. I make a pot of coffee, let the dogs out, and then snuggle on the Vetsak on the terrace and watch the whole world wake up and come to life,” says the owner. “Evenings are also pretty special. When the sun dips behind us, the mountains beyond glow like they’re on fire. We light the braai, relax in the hot tub or pool, play Uno or backgammon, have a glass of wine and wait for night to fall.”
