‘It’s absolutely magic here,’ says Sue, who fell in love with this waterside location when her partner brought her out to the 32ha Gloria Bay Estate on Theewaterskloof Dam in the Overberg, to see it for the first time. Originally purchased in 2012, but having been rebuilt after a fire, it’s their dream home, one they’ve worked together on as a team and is now for sale. ‘In fact, being on the water sometimes feels like the Italian countryside I love so much. It’s like Lake Como on star-lit evenings, with the lights twinkling across the water and valley beyond,’ says Sue.
Both wanted a laid-back but extremely well-equipped bolthole from the city – where family and friends could literally arrive and relax completely. ‘We never feel like leaving once we’ve driven here, with over 80kms of mountain biking and cycling routes, boating on the dam, sensational walks on the estate and beautiful views of farmland as far as the eye can see.’
In winter, bright yellow canola fields and snow-capped peaks are utterly mesmerising. In spring, surrounding fruit orchards are swathed in delicate blossom. ‘If we do leave, it’s to take a magnificent country drive to Greyton for lunch or head to Gabriëlskloof for wine tasting. But we usually come fully prepared with all our food as we also find it very hard to leave!’ laughs Sue. For this reason, the house is very comfortable in all weathers. Privacy is also guaranteed by build-free zones around the property and only 19 houses built on the estate, who could ask for more?
Inspiration for the sophisticated Hampton’s-style design of The Lake House came from the owner’s home in New Orleans, and years spent recently in Louisiana. It’s also in keeping with the Cape Cod architectural style of the estate, and extremely well insulated and with immaculate finishes. Inside its modest blue-grey walls, it’s infused with colour, patterned wallpapers, herringbone tile detailing and superb design touches were fun to choose together as a team.
It’s no surprise that weekends here fast became Thursday-to-Monday long weekends, especially a state-of-the-art, off-grid system allows remote work from the office with its massive picture-window taking in spectacular water and mountain views. And when friends and family arrive, delicious lunches and pizzas are cooked together while grandchildren have a ball in the garden.
Life is so good here at The Lake House, it’s hard to imagine living anywhere else.
The owner is also happy to share the property with those who love the outdoors and the water. If you would prefer to purchase a share in the property please enquire below for the options.
